Cap Haitien Citadelle Tour
The Citadelle Laferrière is a must-see during your visit to Haiti. The largest fortress of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site stands majestically on top of the Bonnet a L’Eveque mountain, three thousand feet above the sea. Citadelle Laferrière was built between 1805 and 1820 by King Henry Christophe to defend the new nation against French invasion. The fortress stands tall, bristling with 350 cannons and mortars and overlooking the bay of Cap Haitien.
This historic tour starts with a car ride to a small town Milot. Our proficient tour guide will pick you up from your Hotel in a 4x4 car.
Our first stop will be a tour of the ruins of the Sans-Souci Palace, the residence of King Henry Christophe, and yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This magnificent palace was the site for opulent feasts and dances. However, the earthquake in 1842 severely damaged the palace, which was then never rebuilt.
The next stop will be Citadelle through the roads paved with limestone. Along the way, you will pass through villages and breathtaking views of the countryside. Your tour guide will also tell you the story behind this majestic fortification. Upon reaching the base of the Bonnet a L’Eveque mountain, getting to the fortress has two options for you: a 30-minute uphill walk or a horseback ride. You will also visit the Artillery Museum with the unique concentration of 18th century cannons in the continent.
After your tour of La Citadelle, a delicious Haitian-style lunch will be waiting for you at a cultural restaurant in Milot. Here, you will also enjoy the Haitian folklore and tambour during your meal. After lunch, you will drive to Cap Haitien for a quick visit before getting back to your hotel.
